Our Vision
“Read Across Jamaica” an initiative created and introduced by Ja’nice Wisdom was initiated in 2003, in the Parish of St. Elizabeth at Siloah Primary School to help promote literacy in Jamaica and support the VISION 2030 Goals set by the Ministry of Education. As a student research project examining the education system in Jamaica, the rate of students being passed from one grade to another without mastery of basic literacy skills was startling. The literacy initiative of Read Across Jamaica was presented as a test of change to address the gaps and it fell in-line with what the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) saw as ideal.
Today, Non-Governmental Agencies (NGOs) and non-profits organizations are actively participating in outreach to communities across the island in an effort to meet their social responsibility – a torch lit by the Read Across Jamaica Foundation.

Founder, Executive Director
Ms. Ja’nice Wisdom, Executive Director and Founder of Read Across Jamaica Foundation has put her passion into building and branding Read Across Jamaica and its Literacy Initiative.
Ms. Wisdom, a community activist, is responsible for introducing the literacy initiative concept to the Jamaica Teachers Association in 2003 as a research paper while studying at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). There she served as Chair of the University Of Maryland Student Teachers Chapter. In the United States, Ja’nice’s work organizing national Reading Circles for Read Across America celebrations has expanded to local Caribbean American communities, elementary schools and libraries projects.
Ms. Wisdom is a strong leader in her community, intelligent, astute and very passionate on issues related to children and literacy. She has worked for the National Education Association in Washington, DC, where she administered Membership Outreach initiatives, the ICF Child Welfare Services Division in McLean, VA and the Securities Exchange Commission in Washington, DC, coordinating Leadership Training Programs.
Ja’nice Wisdom is a second generation Jamaican with strong ties to the Tomlinson-Rowe family in Siloah, St. Elizabeth. Just like her active relatives, Dr. Una Clarke & Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, her concern for others runs deep. Her passion for life will leave a lasting legacy for the children of America, Jamaica and the international community. Ms. Wisdom is the daughter of a US Air Force Veteran and devout Christian (the late, Deacon Willie Morgan).
Our Mission
The mission of Read Across Jamaica Foundation is to introduce creative and interactive methods of reading that encourages children to engage in lifelong learning. While engaged in the enjoyment of a good book’s content, the process of learning to read aids children in avoiding a lifestyles impacted by illiteracy. This engagement creates opportunity for modelling positive communication and mentoring to students. Our mission is to be that passionate conduit and positive light for youth and community.
Our Objective
Read Across Jamaica Foundation’s goal is to assist schools, enrichment centers, and after school programs in acquiring diverse library resources that encourage students to increase their opportunities to learn and to read. This requires collaborative coordination and facilitation of:
– Annual reading day events along with bi-monthly activities.
– Coaching, connections and incentives provided by socially
responsible leaders.
– Partnerships with schools, communities, parents, businesses,
global sponsors and policy makers.
The growth and success of this program has sprung up in many classrooms across the island with the declaration of Read Across Jamaica Day (celebrated on Tuesday during Education week)
